On the night of September 29 to 30, New York was illuminated by the Harvest Moon which is the name for the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox. At that time, the moon is bright, huge and full-looking for several nights depending on how far North you watch. In the Northern states, the Harvest Moon will continue to shine until the beginning of October (http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/harvest-moon-2)

Harriet asked citifari a unique request: a photo tour to capture the Harvest Moon. Native from Texas, Harriet would travel to NYC just to capture that moon. She has been dreaming of that shot all of her life. At citifari, we like new challenges, we wanted to unique on Saturday evening. We met Harriett and her friend for a downtown walk chasing the moon. As the moon rises east, we started from the piers, then we went to the Brooklyn Bridge and we finished our special tour with capturing the moon over the Manhattan skyline from Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The exercise was not easy. As the moon was rising up over the buildings; we had to be at the right place at the right time! We spent a lot of time discussing about the itinerary. What was the best place to photograph the Harvest Moon? At what time was the moon at its zenith? Through our calculations, we also noticed that the moon could be perfectly aligned with the Brooklyn Bridge.

Even if the sky was overcast on September 29th, Jean-François, the guide for the evening taught the group how to take great pictures of the cloudy sky.
Strong of these explanations Harriet and her friend came back the next evening to finally capture the moon ex-clouds!
We thank Jean-François for his precious advices and Harriet for proposing the Harvest Moon Photo Tour. For sure we will be there next year to cover this great event!

about Harriet: Harriet is a retired school teacher from Texas with a passion for photography. You will find more of Harriet's work on pbase.

Armagan is a 43 year old independent marketing manager whose hobbies include photography, windsurfing, and writing. With her husband (a very famous news programmer on Turkish TV) they are very curious about large cities outside of Istambul. This year she decided to come and “live” New York for a full month. Based in Queens and Armagan visited everything walking and taking subways. She also took a marketing seminar at NYU.

As Armagan was planning their trip from Turkey, her number one priority when coming to NY was to take pictures. She researched “photo tours in NY” including on twitter.

Citifari always responded to me. We established real and nice communication… Always helpful and responsive… I bought a first tour on the Internet after I went, I bought them all. Their Night photo tour was my first experience of citifari. I had never photographed at night and I didn’t have tripod. Luckily, Citifari had some for me… I shoot with a Canon 550D and with the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 and Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 lenses.
I went to the night tour with a sweet team of other photographers. I didn’t think about learning new skills. I just always thought “taking photos equals taking photos”. My plan was to see new places and visit… But, now I have added and learnt new techniques about taking photos and how to use my camera better… Citifari is valuable and very reliable… Thank you very much…

When I came back, GFK, the leading market research agency in Turkey announced a photo contest about “Change” on social networks. I sent an email with two of my pictures. They selected the one I took with Citifari to be published on their calendar 2013. This calendar and my picture will be at millions of GFK’s customers in Turkey, this is really a big deal.

I plan to do more of these photo visits. New places, new trips, new experience… Now I realize that taking pictures means continual personal improvement, I feel strong about an exhibition in Istanbul…

Thanks Terry for sending us an awesome review and the link to some of the pictures you took during your tours. We love to hear what you think and how to improve our tours.

I have lived and worked around the City for over 15 years, I now live in Atlanta, Ga but travel here for business a lot. Just bought a Canon T3 and a couple of lenses (10-22, 70-300, etc.) and I am reading and experimenting every chance I get to learn photography more. While here I thought I would do one of the cheesy double decker bus tours since the last time I did one was in the late 90's to at least be able to capture some of the more decent shots. I wasn’t excited about having to sit in traffic or shooting from the moving bus. On a chance I googled photography tours and Citifari popped up. I did the afternoon landmark tour and the night tour and it far exceeded what I was hoping for. The sites were great but for an old New Yorker that had seen all of them many times the specific selections that were chosen to demonstrate a new composition, exposure or technique were awesome. Every portrait I will take going forward I will think about the Library Lion. What a great way to associate very technical settings with a memorable experience. The added benefit is the random discussions with a real photographer as you walked from site to site. Louis is young, laid back and very easy to discuss topics with, unlike many of the pretentious photographers that you meet out there. I only wish I had found it earlier in the week I would have taken the Central Park tour as well.

Here is a link to my pictures: http://on.fb.me/KFuNqF

Thanks Terry!

The camera bag is an important part of any photographer's gear, often met with dissatisfaction... until you find the right bag.

Stuffing your camera here, your ipad there, your filters, different objectives, remote control, flash, papers and unstuffing all that into another bag, taking two bags, check list to make sure I did not forget anything, ... this is the life of the photographer. As many of us, I have my photography job (at www.citifari.com, we do photo tours of new york city), my personal projects, a few gigs here and there and travels for pleasure. I believe my wife was annoyed to see me spending too much time packing and unpacking rather than working, that she decided to find a solution. She did her due diligence and purchased the Union Street bag from ONA... whaaaaa what a bag!

When she gave it to me I was really skeptical. For a while, I had looked for a solution to carry my equipment and had concluded that the needs of the photographers are too diverse to fit in one bag. I was so happy to be wrong. The Union Street from ONA is so versatile, it fits the dress code during an event or on travel. I can fit the ipad inside the bag for transport or in the pocket outside with easy access during a citifari photo tour. I can modify the placements of the pads inside the bag depending on whether i take my flash or my 24-105! I can fit so much stuff, it's not even funny. And everything is padded at the right place to prevent from shocks and falls. My back used to hurt after a few hours with just my camera and an additional lens in the sling bag, with the ONA, I can carry more for the whole day and be perfectly fine. And when I want to travel light, the bag is not a burden, it seems to retract itself to a messenger type bag!

Enough to say that I love the bag and if it weren't my wife who offered it to me, I would sleep with it instead!

Open House New York (OHNY) is the great annual free event that showcases hundreds of NYC’s architecturally and culturally significant spaces and places, usually not open to the public.

For this year's, citifari organized a unique photo tour that would focus on those places that we don't have access to and that could offer great photo opportunities. The key to a successful day is preparation. We put a schedule together that would cover unique opportunities to learn about, explore and photograph NYC’s built environment. Down to 5 places for the day, we were ready to start at 9am with our cameras, full loads of batteries and memory cards.

We met the courageous ones at 9am at 505 Fifth Avenue. The building was constructed in 2005 by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF). Its lobby was accessible for OHNY and welcomed us with its space odyssey look. The 26-story, glass-clad building’s entrance lobby was designed in collaboration with artist James Turrell. The dynamic design turns the space into a three-dimensional light sculpture that continuously transforms itself over the course of the day.

Through the day OHNY staff was helpful to get us the information we needed regarding the spaces, the events and tours that were being organized specifically for the weekend or simply providing guidance and orientation. Our day would take us through an eclectic mix made of a residential building, architect bureau, a fashion incubator, an NGO and a museum. The commonality for all these places was the welcoming atmosphere and the enthusiasm of the participants to describe us the place they love to work or live in.

Specifically, after the 505 Fifth, we visited:
•	the Ford Foundation,
•	the Japan Society,
•	CFDA Fashion Incubator, and
•	Dattner Architects.

We had to significantly reduce our already lighten agenda to enjoy all the tours and photo opportunities at each of the places. Also our lunch in Korea-town took much longer than planned as we were reviewing each other's pictures and relaxing after the walks through the City.

There is not one specific high point in the day. We enjoyed each and every place. The 505 Fifth for its unique spacey atmosphere; the Ford Foundation for its interior gardens and for its conservation of original carpentry and furniture; the Japan Society both for the organization of the space reminding of Japanese gardens and the current exhibit (Fiber Futures: Japan's Textile Pioneers); CDFA for the unique concept of fashion incubator but also for the space that provides a versatile environment to 8 carefully selected designers or Dattner for the passion of the architect that was leading our tour and the details in each of their projects.
OHNY was the opportunity to learn more about New York, its history, its future and the mechanisms at play but also to take great photos and have a good time with friends. Next year, citifari will offer its photo tours for the 10th anniversary of OHNY, don't forget to register!

We were lucky to be invited last night to the opening reception for WPO in New York at the Chelsea Art Museum.

Starting yesterday, a series of events, workshop and photo classes will be held at the museum and for a month until November 12.

The space is amazing and very well arranged to receive very different types of photography styles, in various formats and differing subjects. The juxtaposition and the arrangements are interesting to analyze.

From fine arts to war photography by Instagram, the exhibit gives a taste of everything you could look for in a photographer (maybe with the exception of wedding photography). The exhibit is also the opportunity to display the winners of the Sony World Photography Awards in each of the 10 categories.

While there were a lot of talented photographers, we noticed in particular:

Javier Arcenillas - http://www.javierarcenillas.com for his works on the sicarios

Alnis Stakle - http://www.alnisstakle.com for his Paris series

Denis Rouvre - http://www.rouvre.com and his “sortie de reunion” portraits

Amit Madheshiya - http://amitmadheshiya.photoshelter.com as he traveled with the cinema tent

Lawrence Smith - http://www.lawrencesmith.com for white on white pictures of flowers

Richard Bailey - http://www.richardbaileyphotography.co.uk and his portraits of Down syndrome Sarah after Vermeer

While spacious, the ground floor was crowded and wined.

After this opening we went to check the other openings on the street. Of note, Barbara Takenaga at the DC Moore Gallery.

If you get the chance, go check the Chelsea Art Museum before November 12.

Tomorrow: Open House New York, hope to come back with more pictures this time!

We have asked Steven Morrison, M.A., creator of the Spiritual Workout to help us find the right "state of mind" for when you are out taking pictures.

First, you might want to ask yourself, What is my intention (or what are my intentions)? What am I hoping to achieve? What would I like to walk away with? Intentions matter in no small part because they help us with the decisions we make moment-by-moment, hour-by-hour, day-by-day. Some examples of intentions might be:
•	To take a handful of really good pictures
•	To spend time away from the people with whom I am traveling
•	To learn more about my camera
•	To try something different
•	To meet like-minded people
•	To enhance my skills
•	etc...

You can see, by the way, that there is no limit to how many intentions one can have but being clear about what they are always makes everything better. Thus, an intention to take a handful of really good pictures might help you to not concern yourself with making sure you get every single possible shot known to man and beast. And an intention to enhance your skills might help you focus them on what you are doing vs. what others are doing. And on and on...

Second, I would probably suggest that with an intention or two (or more) in place that you take a quick inventory of the beliefs you have about your intentions. For example, a belief that “I am a terrible photographer” would not align very well with an intention to take really good pictures. Now, maybe it is too large a task to turn such a belief around on the spot so if that is the case, a simple statement like “Up until now I have been a terrible photographer” will open the space energetically for new possibilities. You can feel that as you read it, yes?

Finally (for now!), I would encourage you to look at your photography experience through the lens of choices abound. Everything is a choice and nobody is there because they have to be. When we look closely at the choices we make, we always learn something about ourselves and what we value. This is a generally more contemplative question that may not deliver an immediate answer. But it could also be nice to have it ruminating while you are out taking pictures. For example: “My choice to be out today shows me how much I value my creative side” or “My choice to be out today shows me that I am capable of doing something for myself” etc. Also, when we choose something, we are often not choosing something else. Looking there can also help to point back to us.

Spiritual Workout emphasizes the practice of 15 ancient and universally recognized spiritual concepts in everyday's life.
TIP: Keep Less Pictures

You attended your best friend’s wedding and came back with 100 excellent pictures; you have 400 amazing pictures from your backpacking trip abroad; you spent a week in New York City and have over 200 great pictures or you took the citifari photo tour over the afternoon and believe that 50 of these shots are worth keeping. Really? Maybe not.

Here are three reasons why you should keep fewer pictures:

Reason #1: time to review – if you are sharing these pictures online or offline, think about your audience. How long will it take them to go through all these pictures? If it takes 2 seconds to review a picture, no offence but, will anyone want to spend 15 minutes going over the pictures of your trip? More than a minute to review your afternoon? And this is not counting the potential download times if you were to send them over the internet. Will you go over these 400 pictures next year and review them all? Is the idea of spending 15 minutes to look at pictures that you have already seen before discouraging enough for you not to look at them ever again? What if it took you 2 minutes instead of 15? Would you consider looking over them again? Probably.

Reason #2: improve your photo skills – by filtering your pictures and keeping only the best ones, you will get used to thinking about the photos you will like best from the moment of shooting. You will also become more discerning about your photography. Next time, when you are out, you will already know and will try to shoot only those pictures that you think you will like afterwards. You will already visualize the outcome when taking the shot and that will impact the quality of your photos.

Reason #3: post-processing effort – if you work on your pictures after uploading them onto your computer, performing a first selection with the best ones before processing will save you a lot of time as you won’t have to work on them anymore. Once adjusted, you can then perform another selection and keep the very few that are really good. This is time saved for you to shoot more.

Then, how many pictures is the right number of pictures? It depends but you can try the following:

Click here to download this tip - Keep Less Pictures

We all post pictures on social platforms such as facebook, flickr, twitter, etc… And we all know that “A picture is worth a thousand words”. What about giving back a few words to the picture that spared us from the thousand words?

On adding a title
I can see a few reasons for adding a title, think about these when our picture doesn’t have one:

Who asks us the meaning, the goal or what we wanted to express with our photo?

Who asks us where, when or what we captured in picture?

Who spends more than one second looking at our picture seriously?

Already, only by adding a title to our picture, we clarify it and also trigger some thinking among our audience - our friends on these social networks. A title does not need to be descriptive all the time, we can introduce irony, humor, sarcasm, we can draw parallels, repetition, doubt, etc… all these by picking a good title. The easiest way to pick a title remains to write what first comes to our mind. Surprisingly, different people will see different things in one same picture. When adding our first thought in the title, we frame our audience and make it see what we see, think what we think, wonder how or why this title or even disagree.

We seek to say something with a photo, we have already done the hard work, we captured and posted the picture. Now, we want people to look at it and react, let’s add a title. This would be step one.

On adding commentaries
What else? Our audience likes context. At the time of photo albums and slideshow evenings, the amateur photographer gathered with its audience to describe the photos he took, his or her intent, what the pictures represented, etc… In addition to the title, the photographer could complement the picture with some personal comments and context. Today, we post our pictures online, our friends may or may not look at them by themselves, from their own computer and without explanations. Many social platforms allow us to comment on our pictures. An easy way to add comments is to look up some information about the subject in our picture, check Wikipedia or and pick the most interesting parts (don’t forget to mention the source) in our comments, add a link to the Wikipedia page. We can also often find online articles that describe what we witnessed or, when feeling courageous, post our own comments.

Adding context to our pictures will allow us to learn about the subject, a necessary condition to improve our art. At the time of film photography, Ansel Adams, for instance, would research his subjects for hours off- and then on-site before releasing the shutter and burning one of the 8 plates he was carrying for that day. He had to think a lot about his subject before taking that one picture. Today, with the luxury of digital photography, we can take hundreds of pictures, post the best among them and then document them. Now, learning about our subject is a matter of minutes spent browsing the Internet, and we can even do it after posting the picture!

Download the thought piece here Posting pics on social media

Switching from the automatic to semi-automatic and then to the manual mode requires that you understand the effects of the settings in your camera.

The making of a picture is based on 3 settings. While composing the picture and deciding what you would like to include or exclude in the picture as well as how you want your subject to relate to its environment, you will have to determine how to set your ISOs, Aperture (F number) and Shutter Speed. The three settings have a relationship with the amount (quantity) of light that impacts your sensor and ultimately how bright is your picture. But these three settings also affect how (quality) the light gets to the sensor and can change an image in its entirety.

Click here to view a memento summary of the settings and associated effects.
